A Renewed Commitment for Common Sense Solutions

January 25, 2010:  Today I filed the necessary paperwork with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office to run for re-election.  When I first ran for Congress, I made a simple promise to put the interest of West Virginians first.  Over the last decade, I have worked in a bi-partisan manner to find common sense solutions to our problems.  Today, we face serious challenges from record job losses and staggering deficits to a greater demand for energy independence and increased threats from terrorists at home and abroad.

At a time when we should be leading the nation in providing solutions to our energy needs, our state faces an assault from liberal special interests in Washington who seek to destroy our vital energy producing industries.  I will continue to fight the Obama Administration’s efforts to limit coal production because common sense tells me that in the midst of job loses the last thing government should do is seek to destroy good paying jobs.

I was the lone voice from West Virginia to vote against increasing our debt – in just the last year our deficit has more than tripled from $400 billion to over $1.5 trillion.  Spending is just one reason why I voted against the health care plan that would add to our deficits and hurt our state’s budget by costing us up to $725 million.

Opponents have consistently attacked me for voting to bring terrorist to justice; however, the recent attempts to blow up an airplane make it clear to me that we must remain steadfast in our commitment to fighting terrorism.

I have a renewed commitment and energy to fight for West Virginia jobs, reduce spending and protect our communities.  I look forward to the campaign ahead, traveling the 18 counties in the district, and talking to West Virginians about common sense solutions to our nation’s challenges.

Thank you!

Two simple words that will never fully express the gratitude and appreciation my family and I feel for your efforts on my behalf this year. For those who gave of their time and money to make a difference in what was a personally difficult election, I am honored in the trust and confidence you have placed in me.

Thank you for putting a sign in your yard, a bumper sticker on your car, talking to your friends and neighbors, and joining me on the campaign trail. One of the rewarding parts of this campaign was the 18 counties my husband Charlie, daughter Shelley and I traveled in the three days leading up to November 4th. Everywhere we were greeted by enthusiastic crowds of supporters – over 1,000 in total – to stand with us.

That trip reminded me of the reason why this job is so important. It is truly about all of you and all the people who call West Virginia home. Every decision I make in Congress starts and ends with what is in the best interest of West Virginia. Together we overcame long odds and defied the experts by matching our margin of victory the previous two elections. All this despite a well financed opponent who campaigned very hard and a major, negative ad campaign at the end by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

This is going to be an exciting time to be in Washington, and the next two years will bring many changes and new challenges to our nation and state. I look forward to working with the new leadership in Congress and President-Elect Obama to solve the current financial crisis and protect our country. One of my highest priorities will be to pass a comprehensive, bi-partisan energy bill for America that promotes West Virginia energy and reduces our reliance on foreign oil. I am concerned about the growing attacks that the coal industry faces among some in Washington, and I will continue to seek bi-partisan solutions that will protect and promote our state’s precious resource.

Thank you again for all your efforts on my behalf, and I look forward to working with you and seeing you over the next two years.
